El Ministerio del Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible (MADES) celebra un hallazgo extraordinario: el registro fotográfico del jagua yvyguy (Speothos venaticus), también conocido como perro vinagre, en el Parque Nacional Serranía San Luis. Esta es la primera vez que se documenta oficialmente su presencia en esta área protegida, y el primer avistamiento en la zona en más de cuatro décadas, según relatan pobladores locales.
Esta especie, catalogada como en peligro de extinción según la Resolución MADES N.º 632/17, es extremadamente rara en Paraguay. Hasta ahora, sus registros eran esporádicos y se concentraban principalmente en el Bosque Atlántico, el Pantanal y los bosques de galería del Chaco húmedo. Su escasa presencia y comportamiento esquivo han dificultado su estudio, lo que convierte este nuevo registro en un valioso aporte para comprender mejor su situación actual.
Desde el MADES, a través de la Dirección de Protección y Conservación de la Biodiversidad, se están impulsando acciones para proteger al jagua yvyguy, como el fortalecimiento de áreas protegidas y programas de monitoreo que buscan conocer más sobre su ecología y los impactos que enfrenta.
El perro vinagre es una especie amenazada por la pérdida de hábitat, la caza ilegal y enfermedades transmitidas por animales domésticos. Por eso, resulta clave reforzar las políticas públicas y fomentar el compromiso de las comunidades para conservar esta especie única de nuestra fauna.
